The Duchess of York will be in Southampton on Saturday as part of the South Coast Boat Show.
As part of the event, a welcoming parade and celebration party have been planned to honor the crew of the yacht, Maiden. The journey of Maiden, who completed her final round the world race on Tuesday, April 16 in Cowes, was achieved by a young all-female crew.
Utilizing only a sextant, charts, and the stars, they successfully traveled over 28,000 nautical miles. Maiden has made history thirty-four years ago as the first ever all-female crew to sail around the globe in the 1990 Whitbread Round the World Race.
The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, has been a supporter of Maiden since its inception and even named the boat during its original launch. Expressing her pride, the Duchess of York stated her admiration for Maiden’s crew in completing their final round the world race, saying โYou are extraordinary and your strength and determination is truly inspiring.โ
A special event at this year’s South Coast & Green Tech Boat Show
In honor of Maiden and her crew’s incredible accomplishments, we are pleased to announce a special event at this year’s South Coast & Green Tech Boat Show. Join us in celebrating their homecoming with a parade and party, dedicated to paying tribute to their achievements. All boats are welcome to participate in the Parade of Sail, departing from Cowes at 0800hrs on Saturday, April 20th and heading to Ocean Village Marina.
Moreover, we are delighted to announce that our Guest of Honour for Maiden’s homecoming will be none other than Sarah, The Duchess of York. As Maiden’s Godmother during the Whitbread Round the World Race in 89/90, the Duchess has been a devoted supporter of the boat and its crew since its launch. She will be present on the pontoon in Southampton to greet Maiden upon her return.
